About
The Story
On May 12, 1903, a group of men met at the local doctor’s office to form the Planters Mercantile Company and to discuss the purchase of property for the purpose of building a store. Just a few months later, the building was completed by the Davis Larkin Company of Chicago for $11,250, and so began the 120-year-old story of what is now called The Historic Planters Building.
Following the Great Depression, Planters Mercantile Company dissolved, and the property was purchased by one of the shareholders. Planters Hardware Store opened a few years later and served Southwest Mississippi until it closed in 2010. In 2013, new owners renovated and reopened the doors to the public as Opposite Ends Gift Shop and The Vintage Cafe.
Holly and Mike Rabalais moved to Woodville in 2018, having no intention to purchase an old building nor any idea that owner Ramona Pace would soon decide to close her business and sell her building. As all great stories go, there was a chance encounter with a spark of an idea and in July 2019 they became the new owners. Just a few months later, the COVID pandemic halted the momentum of gaining new clients, but the couple used the season to continue renovations of the building, creating a space that maintains its historic feel with modern amenities.
52 events were held during The Historic Planters Building’s fourth year of business, including birthday parties, baby and bridal showers, repasts, weddings, proms, school assemblies, graduation celebrations, art workshops, and family reunions. Year Five is expected to be an even greater success.
